Unilateral spatial neglect is one of the severe sequelae of stroke. The evaluation of the severity has been performed by Behavioural Inattention Test, Albert’s deletion, reproduction of pictures, etc. on a sheet of paper. In this paper, we propose a novel approach using a personal computer with a touch panel display. We found that the time analysis of patients’ behavior gave more sensitive diagnosis than the paper test.

When pregnant women have a caesarean section under lumber anesthesia, most of them develop low blood pressure because of a hyperbaric anesthetic. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the preventive effect of a 20 centimeter footrest to raise their legs after beginning lumber anesthesia on low blood pressure. Out of 33 pregnant women, 17 raised legs and 16 did not. The average time before administration of drip containing a vasopressure (neosinejin: vasoconstrictive) was 4.7  3.9 (n = 17) minutes in intervention group and 5.3  10.6 (n = 16) minutes in control group. The average duration of a drip was 18.8  8.7 (n = 16) minutes in control group and 9.9  9.4 (n = 17) minutes in intervention group, about half as much. The total hemorrhage average during an operation had no statistical difference between intervention group and control group, 2740.0  333.3 (n=17) and 2704.5  493.2 (n = 16), respectively. This study suggests that raising legs of pregnant women has a preventive effect on low blood pressure without increasing bleeding under lumber anesthesia.

Recently, the end user comfort on seating has developed into an important issue. In this context, the studies on sitting comfort have increased its importance. Body pressure distribution is one of the most common measurements to evaluate sitting comfort, and it is said that this measurement appears to the objective measure with the most clear association with the subjective ratings. Many of the researchers have reported the relationship between seat comfort and body pressure distribution, and most of the reports concentrate on short-term and stable sitting. However, when evaluating seat comfort, especially seat cushion comfort, body movements and re-sits are often seen. It was considered that the change in condition of contact between seat and human body is important for evaluating seat comfort and discomfort. This paper was focused on the change of pressure distribution during sit-down motion, and the relationship between seat comfort and discomfort was discussed. Two hundred and ten volunteers participated on this research, and the result showed some characteristic changes in pressure patterns on comfort and discomfort conditions. The findings of this research would give some useful information for providing comfortable seats/chairs in th future.

In this aging society, in order to prevent the elderly from becoming bedridden, it seems effective to encourage them to roll over by themselves more frequently. To this end, it is desired to establish the criteria for selecting rolling-over movements that are individually suited to elderly people based on the physical problems. This study aimed to determine roll-over patterns by physical features, targeting 40 persons aged 65 or over. The analysis by Quantification Method II has revealed that the important points for predicting the ability to roll over and the roll-over patterns are the ability to lift one’s lower back, activities in their daily lives, grip strength, and body weight.

The objective of the present study is to identify roll-over patterns observed in healthy individuals and to classify roll-over patterns based on their associated physical properties. Each healthy volunteer (n=26) was asked to roll over from the supine position to the lateral position. Based on videotape findings and shifts in the distribution of body pressure roll-over motions were described and divided into four patterns. The results of canonical discriminant analysis with dummy variables showed roll-over patterns could be differentiated based on eight physical properties. The resuts of the present study provide clues for selecting and recommending appropriate roll-over patterns in clinical settings.
